When a child is struggling academically, it can be frustrating and confusing for both the student and their family. I strongly believe that every child wants to do well and succeed in school. When a child is not performing at the level expected, there is often an underlying reason beyond a lack of effort or motivation.
Many students struggle because they learn differently, process information at a different pace, or have difficulty sustaining attention. A comprehensive educational assessment can help identify your child’s unique learning profile, including both strengths and areas that may require additional support. Understanding how a child learns best can help guide effective strategies at home and at school.
Educational and psychoeducational assessments can help identify factors that may be impacting academic performance, including:
Attention and Focus Difficulties (ADHD)
Reading Disorders (Dyslexia)
Disorders of Written Expression
Mathematics Difficulties (Dyscalculia)
Processing Speed Differences
Executive Functioning Challenges
Test Anxiety or Academic Stress
Learning differences that impact school performance
These assessments help determine whether a student’s difficulties reflect a specific learning disorder, attention-related concerns, or other factors that may impact learning.
Parents often seek an educational assessment when they notice their child:
Struggles to keep up with reading, writing, or math
Requires significantly more time to complete homework than peers
Appears capable but performs inconsistently in school
Becomes frustrated, anxious, or overwhelmed by academic tasks
Has difficulty staying focused during schoolwork
Receives feedback from teachers that learning challenges may be present
Is working very hard but still falling behind academically
An evaluation can help provide clarity, direction, and recommendations for supporting your child’s learning.
My assessment process is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of your child’s learning profile.
The process begins with an intake meeting with parents to discuss developmental history, academic concerns, and questions about your child’s learning. This meeting can take place in person or virtually.
With permission, I gather information from teachers who know the child well. Teacher feedback helps provide valuable insight into how the child functions in the classroom setting.
Testing typically involves several hours of in-person assessment. During this time, I administer standardized measures to evaluate areas such as:
Cognitive abilities
Academic skills (reading, writing, and math)
Attention and executive functioning
Memory and learning
Processing speed
Language-based learning skills
This information helps identify both areas of strength and areas where additional support may be beneficial.
After the assessment is completed, I meet with parents to review the results in detail. Families receive a comprehensive written report that includes:
A clear explanation of testing results
Identification of strengths and areas of difficulty
Diagnostic clarification when appropriate
Practical recommendations for home and school
Suggested accommodations or supports when helpful
My goal is to help families better understand their child’s learning style and identify strategies that support academic success.
