Parents often feel uncertain about what an evaluation will involve. My goal is to make the process as clear, supportive, and comfortable as possible for both families and students. A comprehensive educational or ADHD evaluation is designed to help better understand how a child learns, focuses, and processes information, while identifying strengths as well as areas where additional support may be helpful.
The evaluation process typically includes several steps.
The process begins with a meeting with parents to discuss your concerns and questions about your child’s learning, attention, or school performance. During this conversation we review developmental history, academic experiences, and the challenges your child may be encountering.
This meeting helps ensure that the evaluation focuses on the questions that are most important to your family. The consultation can take place in person or virtually, depending on your preference.
Teachers provide valuable insight into how a child functions in the classroom setting. With your permission, I request feedback from teachers who know your child well. This information helps provide a more complete picture of how your child learns and manages school expectations across different environments.
The evaluation includes several hours of one-on-one testing with your child. Testing is typically scheduled across one or more sessions depending on the student’s age and needs.
During the evaluation, students complete a variety of activities that help assess areas such as:
Cognitive abilities (how a child thinks and reasons)
Academic skills in reading, writing, and math
Attention and executive functioning
Memory and learning
Processing speed
Language-based learning skills
Many students find the activities engaging and similar to puzzles, problem-solving tasks, or academic exercises. Breaks are provided as needed to ensure students remain comfortable and able to perform their best.
After testing is completed, I carefully review and analyze the results to understand your child’s overall learning profile. This step involves integrating information from testing, parent input, teacher feedback, and developmental history to identify patterns of strengths and areas that may require support.
Following the evaluation, we schedule a feedback meeting to review the results together. During this meeting, I explain the findings in clear and understandable language and answer any questions you may have.
We will discuss:
Your child’s learning strengths
Areas where additional support may be helpful
Whether any diagnoses are appropriate
Recommendations for school and home
My goal is to ensure families leave the meeting with a clear understanding of their child’s learning profile and practical strategies to support success.
After the feedback session, you will receive a detailed written report summarizing the evaluation. The report includes:
A description of the assessment process
Test results and interpretation
Diagnostic clarification when appropriate
A list of your child's areas of strength and areas for growth
Recommendations for school supports or accommodations
Strategies that may help support learning and attention
Families often share this report with schools to help guide educational planning.
The purpose of an evaluation is not simply to identify challenges, but to develop a clearer understanding of how a child learns best. This information can help parents and educators support a student’s confidence, reduce frustration, and build effective learning strategies.
