Helping Teens and Preteens Build Confidence, Balance, and Emotional Resilience
The preteen and teenage years can be a time of tremendous growth and change. As kids move toward greater independence, they often face new academic expectations, social pressures, and emotional challenges.
For some teens, these changes can lead to overwhelming emotions, anxiety, or difficulty managing relationships and responsibilities.
As a parent, it can be painful to watch your child struggle and feel unsure how to help. Therapy provides a supportive space where teens can better understand their emotions, develop healthy coping skills, and build greater confidence in navigating life’s challenges.
I provide therapy for preteens (ages 10+) and teens who may be experiencing:
• Intense emotions that feel difficult to manage
• Anxiety, worry, or feeling overwhelmed
• Sadness, withdrawal, or loss of motivation
• Self-harm behaviors or risky coping strategies
• Body image concerns or struggles with eating
• Difficulty managing friendships or peer relationships
• Stress related to school, organization, or academic expectations
• Attention or learning challenges affecting confidence
Many teens who come to therapy are thoughtful and capable young people who are simply feeling overwhelmed by emotions or expectations.
Therapy provides a safe and structured environment where teens can explore their experiences while learning practical skills for managing life’s challenges.
Through a collaborative process, therapy can help teens:
• Understand and regulate strong emotions
• Develop effective coping strategies for stress and anxiety
• Build confidence and self-esteem
• Improve communication with parents and peers
• Develop healthier relationships with food and body image
• Build structure and organization for school success
Over time, many teens begin to feel more confident in their ability to manage emotions and navigate difficult situations.
A central part of my work with teens involves Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based treatment designed to help individuals who experience intense emotions or difficulty regulating their reactions.
I have extensive training in DBT and have led DBT skills groups for teens and families for over a decade.
DBT focuses on building practical skills in four key areas:
Learning to stay present and aware of thoughts and emotions.
Managing difficult situations without becoming overwhelmed or engaging in harmful coping behaviors.
Understanding and balancing strong emotions more effectively.
Communicating clearly, setting boundaries, and maintaining healthy relationships.
Many families find that DBT provides a shared language and set of tools that helps both teens and parents navigate difficult moments with greater understanding and calm.
While therapy sessions are primarily focused on the teen, parents play an important role in the process. When appropriate, I collaborate with families to help strengthen communication and provide strategies that support progress at home.
This collaborative approach often helps create a supportive environment where teens can practice and reinforce the skills they are learning.
